The canons provided in the CIC for the interpretation of norms (canons 16-19 CIC) do not so much respond to a peculiar canonical tradition as to a concrete codifying model, peculiar to a very different context from today. Comparing the canonical norms with other codes that follow the same model and with codes of different models helps to contextualize the interpretive canons more lucidly within a broader tradition – the ius commune – allowing the restarting of an enriching dialogue between canon law and secular laws.
